Levitation Perfected, Battery Management System Validated

How Hyperloop UPV uses Speedgoat to tune, test, and innovate safely

Hyperloop UPV, the student team from Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, has been advancing hyperloop technology for over a decade. Their mission: deliver a safe, scalable, and sustainable alternative to high-speed transport.

At European Hyperloop Week 2025, we spoke with the team to learn how Speedgoat solutions help develop, validate, and innovate across subsystems.

Real-Time Levitation Control

Keeping a hyperloop pod stable in a vacuum tube requires precise levitation control. “The biggest challenge this year was the levitation control. More precisely adjusting the values of the PID controller,” said Miquel Montañana, Hyperloop UPV’s Technical Director. Working with Speedgoat hardware-in-the-loop enables testing with real signals and allows quick adjustments. Using Speedgoat solutions helped the team save weeks of effort. By iterating rapidly with the Performance real-time test system, the team kept their project on schedule and ensured safe, reliable performance at competitive speeds.

Safe Validation of Charging Systems

Hyperloop UPV developed new onboard high-voltage charging units in-house, which created the challenge of testing their battery management system (BMS). Since direct connection to real batteries was neither feasible nor safe, the team turned to the Performance test system with the Battery Cell Emulator (BCE) for hardware-in-the-loop testing of their BMS. This enabled them to safely validate charger control algorithms and quickly verify the functionality of critical power electronics — all without the risk of damaging real hardware.

From Research to Scalable Transport

Beyond testing levitation and charging controllers, the team also validates their propulsion, braking, and energy systems.  Whether investigating regenerative braking that recovers up to 525 kWh per trip or designing 10 MW superchargers capable of fully recharging a pod in 15 minutes, Hyperloop UPV continues to address the industrial feasibility of Hyperloop transport, supported by Speedgoat-enabled workflows.
